Biogas Power Explained

Biogas is a type of biofuel that is produced when organic material is broken down through fermentation or anaerobic microbial digestion. Biogas can be produced from many different types of material, including biomass, sewage or manure, waste and specially grown energy crops. Biogas that is produced from these types of materials is predominantly composed of methane and carbon dioxide. Biogas can also be produced through the gasification of biomass or wood, in which case it will be composed of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and nitrogen, with only small amounts of methane. Biogas may sometimes contain contaminants such as siloxanes, but these may be removed before the gas is used. Hydrogen, methane and carbon monoxide gases can all be used as fuels. They release large amounts of energy when they are oxidized.

Biogas may be produced either as landfill gas or as digester gas. Landfill gas is created when garbage is sealed underground in a landfill. As more waste is added to the landfill, the lower layers become compressed and sealed off from the air. Under these anaerobic conditions, gases are released as the organic waste decomposes. These gases can be collected and used as biogas. If no system has been put in place to collect the gases produced by decomposition, they can escape and cause problems. Escaped landfill gases can be explosive, contribute to climate change and generate photochemical smog. Digesters are plants that are designed for the production of biogas. They place organic material in airtight tanks with bacteria, which digest the waste and create gases.

Biogas is used as a fuel or to generate electricity. It can be compressed in order to use it to fuel vehicles, either in fuel cells or as fuel for an internal combustion engine. It can also be used for heating and cooking. Biogas can even be concentrated into biomethane, which can be supplied through the normal distribution network for household gas. Biogas can also be used to power an electrical generator, in which case the waste heat that is produced may be used for cooking, heating and keeping the digester that is producing the biogas at the right temperature.

Biogas is a renewable fuel, since it is derived from living material that can be replenished. It is cleaner than fossil fuels, and, since biogas can be produced from waste and garbage, it also offers a solution for waste disposal.

By using the gases that are naturally produced by decomposing material, rather than allowing them to be released into the atmosphere, biogas consumption can help to reduce pollution and prevent climate change. This is because the creation of biogas changes the nature of the gases. The gases that are released after biofuel has been produced and used have a smaller effect on the atmosphere than the gases that would be produced through normal decomposition. Use of biogas could also replace some fossil fuel use, which would reduce the total amount of gases that are released into the atmosphere.

Biogas is still underutilized for electricity production and as a fuel for vehicles. There is a lot of potential for development of this type of renewable energy. It is thought that it would be possible to generate up to three percent of the electricity needed in North American using biogas.

Biogas digesters are employed by 30 million homes in rural China. Biogas use is particularly useful in rural settings where there may not be a ready supply of electricity from other sources. By using biogas rather than other sources of available fuel, people benefit from cleaner air, reduced fuel costs and the ability to produce electricity with a small-scale generator, rather than simply burning fuel for heating and cooking. It also means that people no longer have to spend hours collecting firewood, and that the local forests are protected. Farmers can also use their crop residues for fodder rather than burning them as fuel.

Biogas is a low cost, multipurpose fuel. It can be used for heating and cooking, or to produce mechanical or electrical power. It can also be compressed and used to power vehicles. Biogas is not the only form of renewable energy. PennEnergy.org is a good place to find out more about other types of renewable power.
